Gunmen, in the night on Thursday, January 31, invaded Koro community, in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, shot to death the community’s monarch, Olukoro of Koro, General Segun Aremu, (rtd), and abducted his wife and two others.
Koro community in Kwara State, is a neighbouring town of Irele/Oke, Ako/Ipao/Oke Aiyedun and Ikole of Ekiti State.
The Ekiti communities had recently experienced attacks, resulting in the killing of two kings while one managed to escape before the latest one.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, the Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, condemned the killing of the monarch as well as the abduction of wife and two others, describing it as shocking, reckless and abominable.
“Promising to make the killing of the monarch the gunmen’s “the last crime against humanity,” the governor said that his government would ensure the arrest of the perpetrators.
The governor also charged security agencies not to spare any resources to track down the perpetrators, rescue the monarch’s spouse and others taken away, and bring them to book.
“My profound condolences go to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always,” the governor said in the statement.
Also, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Victor Olaiya, assured that the command’s police operatives would take swift action on the criminals.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire community affected by this heinous act in a statement by police spokeswoman, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police commissioner offered prayers for them on the current challenge.
“Immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act.
“We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.
“Security measures in Koro community have been intensified; tactical teams are being mobilized to beef up security to ensure the safety and well being of residents.
“The CP has urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as we work tirelessly to unravel this matter, arrest and charge the culprits to court.
“The Kwara State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” the statement read.
