Ex-students and alumni of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have written to the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, expressing their opposition to the proposed naming of the institution after late former Governor of Oyo State, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo.
They said that renaming the institution will erase its historical significance and diminish the achievements of countless alumni who have made their mark in various fields.
The petition, signed by a former student, Dr Ismail Adewoyin, on behalf of others, read: “While we acknowledge the contributions of Dr. Olunloyo to the state, we strongly believe that renaming our institution after a politician would undermine its legacy and identity.
“The Polytechnic, Ibadan has stood tall for over 50 years, earning recognition for its academic excellence, innovative research, and technological advancements.
“Renaming the institution would erase its historical significance and diminish the achievements of countless alumni who have made their mark in various fields.
“We draw inspiration from the precedence set by the University of Lagos, where the ex-students protested against the renaming of the institution after Chief M.K.O Abiola in 2014, and the decision was subsequently reversed.
“We urge you to consider alternative ways to honour Dr. Olunloyo’s legacy, such as naming the state Secretariat complex or one of the new government reservation areas after him.
“We respectfully request that you rescind the decision to rename The Polytechnic, Ibadan and allow our beloved institution to retain its original name, which has carried our diplomas and certificates with pride.”
