A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning at the Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano, where an elderly Islamic cleric was killed during the early morning call to prayer.
The deceased, identified as Ladan Zubairu, was performing the first adhan (call to prayer) at dawn when the attack occurred. According to his son, Isa Kasim, his father had completed the first call and was seated inside the mosque reciting supplications ahead of the second call when the assailant struck.
He said the attacker entered the mosque, assaulted the cleric and inflicted fatal injuries. The incident immediately sparked outrage within the community.
Following the attack, residents reportedly mobilised and pursued the suspect, who was later caught and killed by an angry mob. The suspect’s residence was also set ablaze, triggering panic in the area before security agencies intervened.
Kasim said the community ensured the assailant did not escape, adding that incriminating items were later found on him.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said police officers were swiftly deployed to the scene to restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“Our officers intervened promptly, and normalcy has been restored in Maraba Quarters,” Kiyawa said in a statement.
The police recovered the bodies of both the cleric and the suspected attacker and conveyed them to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy, as investigations continue.
