April 22, 2026: Abuja — The Federal Government will on Wednesday, April 22, arraign six individuals, including retired military officers and a serving police inspector, before the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.
‎
‎The defendants—retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani—are facing a 13-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempted treason, terrorism, and money laundering.
‎
‎Also named in the charge is former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, who is reportedly at large.
‎
‎According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly conspired in 2025 to “levy war against the state” in a bid to destabilise the constitutional order and overpower the President.
‎
‎The charges further include failure to disclose intelligence on an alleged treasonable plan and providing support for terrorism-related activities.
‎
‎Prosecutors also alleged that some of the defendants received and retained funds linked to the plot, with transactions running into millions of naira.
‎
‎The arraignment forms part of a broader investigation into an alleged coup plot that has already led to the detention of several military personnel.
‎
‎Meanwhile, wives of some detained officers have continued to demand justice, calling for either the immediate release of their husbands or their prosecution in open court.
‎
‎The women have staged protests in Abuja, expressing concern over prolonged detention and lack of due process.
‎
‎Legal experts note that treason remains one of the gravest offences under Nigerian law, with severe penalties upon conviction.
