May 12, 2026: A woman identified as Ogechi John has been taken into police custody over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John, in Enugu State.
The Enugu State Government confirmed the arrest on Monday, stating that the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following the child’s death at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene, in Enugu East Local Government Area.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. Neighbours alleged that the young girl had suffered repeated maltreatment before she was allegedly beaten to death.
The state Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, condemned the incident and assured residents that the government would ensure justice is served.
She stated that the administration of Peter Mbah maintains a zero-tolerance stance on child abuse and child homicide, adding that authorities acted swiftly after learning about the case.
The commissioner further noted that the government would closely monitor the investigation and legal proceedings to ensure an expedited process.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
Authorities have yet to disclose the police division handling the case or further details surrounding the child’s death.
