Two undergraduates in Osun State have reportedly lost their lives following a suspected cult-related attack in the Ilesa area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, caused panic among residents and students after gunmen allegedly opened fire on the victims.
Sources familiar with the development said one of the victims was a student who had just participated in a sign-out celebration, while the second victim was a commercial motorcyclist conveying him at the time of the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants fled the scene immediately after carrying out the attack, leaving the victims in pools of blood.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that the incident may have been connected to a rivalry between suspected cult groups operating in the area.
“The student was wearing a sign-out shirt when he was attacked. The bike rider carrying him was also shot during the incident,” the source disclosed.
An anti-cultism advocacy group, NaijaConfra, also identified one of the victims simply as Taiwo, claiming he died at the scene, while the motorcyclist reportedly succumbed to injuries after attempting to escape.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that officers were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving distress reports.
Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said investigations had commenced and the matter had been transferred to the anti-cultism unit of the command.
“Yes, the incident happened and two people were killed. Our intelligence personnel are already working on the case, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible,” he said.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the rising cases of cult-related violence in parts of Osun State and other tertiary institutions across the country.
