President Bola Tinubu has directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into allegations surrounding the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), amid growing public scrutiny over the controversial body’s existence and activities.
The directive follows weeks of controversy surrounding the council, which reportedly appeared in the 2026 Appropriation Act despite claims by the Presidency that it is not a recognised government agency.
The matter has sparked widespread concern over budgetary allocations, recruitment approvals and allegations of corruption linked to the organisation.
A statement from the Presidency said the investigation would examine all claims associated with the council, including allegations of financial misconduct, irregular budgetary provisions and any unauthorised government approvals connected to its operations.
The probe comes after civil society organisations, opposition figures and other stakeholders called for an independent investigation into the controversy.
Several groups had urged the President to mandate the ICPC to examine the council’s budgetary history, alleged financial transactions and claims of bribery involving public officials.
The PFIPC controversy intensified after reports emerged that the council received a budget allocation in the 2026 fiscal year, despite questions over its legal status. Critics have also raised concerns over claims that the organisation secured approvals for personnel recruitment and other official activities.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other political stakeholders had called on the President to order a thorough probe, arguing that the allegations have raised serious questions about accountability and governance within public institutions.
The ICPC is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the council’s appearance in government records, the source of its budgetary allocations and whether any public officials violated existing laws or procedures.
The Presidency said the investigation underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the integrity of public institutions.
