The Federal Government on Friday arraigned three suspects before a Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged involvement in the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from schools in Oyo State.
The suspects, who were reportedly arrested following investigations by security agencies, were charged in connection with the kidnapping of pupils and teachers who were seized during attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The abduction, which occurred in May, sparked nationwide concern and prompted a coordinated security operation involving the Department of State Services, the military and other agencies.
The victims were later rescued after spending several weeks in captivity.
At the court session, prosecutors accused the defendants of participating in the planning and execution of the kidnapping operation. The charges were read to the suspects, who entered their pleas before the trial judge.
The prosecution urged the court to remand the defendants pending the commencement of trial, while defence counsel sought bail for their clients.
The court subsequently adjourned proceedings to a later date for the hearing of bail applications and further consideration of the case.
The arraignment comes days after the Federal Government announced the successful rescue of dozens of abducted pupils and teachers taken from three schools in Oyo State during coordinated attacks by gunmen. Security agencies said the operation led to the arrest of several suspects linked to the crime.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to prosecuting those responsible for the kidnapping and strengthening efforts to tackle school-related abductions across the country.
