The University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Mrs Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah, FCA, as its first female Bursar in the institution’s 78-year history.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, described the appointment as a significant milestone and a reflection of the university’s enduring tradition of excellence, integrity and commitment to service.
Adebowale spoke during the assumption of office ceremony for the new Bursar, where he commended the outgoing Bursar, Mr Adewuyi Popoola, for maintaining the university’s financial stability throughout his tenure.
The Vice-Chancellor said the process leading to Zakariyah’s appointment was fair and transparent, stressing that it was conducted without gender or religious bias.
He noted that the university had built its institutional strength on smooth transitions, adding that its reputation extended beyond its immediate environment because of its commitment to excellence and sound values.
Adebowale said Zakariyah’s appointment underscored the enduring foundation upon which UI was established, noting that the institution’s standing was not determined solely by its physical structures but also by the manner in which it conducted its affairs.
He described the university as the first and best university in Nigeria, adding that its reputation had been sustained by its culture of excellence and integrity.
The new Bursar expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for ensuring a fair and seamless appointment process.
Zakariyah pledged to deploy her expertise to effectively lead the Bursary and fulfil its mandate, while assuring the university management of her commitment to efficient service delivery.
She also solicited the continued support of the university management and staff as she begins her tenure.
The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman, and the Chaplain of the Chapel of the Resurrection, The Venerable Dr Victor Idowu Oladele, offered prayers for a smooth transition and a successful tenure for the new Bursar.
