The League of Online Publishers and Editors (LOPE) has urged Nigerians to embrace unity, patriotism and peaceful coexistence as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a goodwill message signed by its Chairman, Favour Benson, LOPE urged Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s journey, celebrate its achievements and renew their commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive nation.
Benson commended the resilience, creativity and contributions of Nigerians to national development, stressing that the country’s progress depends largely on the commitment and active participation of its citizens.
She said Nigeria’s diversity remained one of its greatest strengths, urging citizens to promote unity, peace and tolerance irrespective of their backgrounds, religion or region.
According to her, “Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary is a significant milestone in our national journey.
“It is an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, appreciate the resilience of our people, and renew our commitment to building a better Nigeria.
“Our diversity remains one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths regardless of our backgrounds, religion, or regions; therefore, we must continue to promote unity, peace, and tolerance.
“As we celebrate this year’s Independence Day, I encourage every Nigerian to contribute positively to the development of our country.”
The LOPE chairman also highlighted the responsibility of online publishers and editors in Nigeria’s evolving digital media space, stressing the need for accuracy, professionalism and responsible journalism.
She said the influence of digital media made it imperative for practitioners to provide credible information, promote constructive public discourse and always protect the public interest.
Benson said, “The digital media space carries enormous influence and responsibility, and as online publishers and editors, we must continue to uphold the principles of responsible journalism, accuracy, professionalism, and public interest.
“LOPE remains committed to supporting a media environment where credible information can thrive and where digital journalism contributes positively to society.”
LOPE also called on government, civil society, the media and other stakeholders to work together to create opportunities for Nigerians and strengthen the country’s democratic and socio-economic institutions.
The association extended its goodwill to Nigerians at home and abroad, wishing citizens a peaceful and meaningful Independence Day celebration.
