A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has reportedly died after collapsing in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel located in the Mosco area of the town.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the lecturer had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday, said the lecturer reportedly collapsed shortly after an encounter with the woman.
She stated that the police received a report of the incident on October 5, 2026, at about 8 p.m.
According to Ikoedem, the deceased had sent the woman to buy water for him, but she allegedly found him lying dead in the room when she returned.
The police spokesperson disclosed that three persons had been arrested in connection with the case. Those in custody include the hotel owner, the hotel manager and the sex worker.
She added that investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
Ikoedem further said the body had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution.
Aladenika, however, noted that the incident occurred outside the university premises and described it as a private matter.
“We are not denying that he was our staff member, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
