•AK-47 rifle, magazines recovered
A suspected kidnapper/ armed robber was felled on Thursday, June 23, by operatives in Delta State Police Command during his attempted escape after arrest.
Disclosing this on Sunday, June 25, the command’s spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, said in a statement that an AK-47 rifle and three magazines were recovered from the suspect.
Giving an insight on how the operation was carried out, the PPRO said that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of ‘A’ Division, Warri, CSP Mahmud Tanko Yakubu, received credible intelligence on Friday at about 6:45am, which made him to lead operatives of his Division to a criminal gang’s hideout located along Stadium Road, Warri.
This, the PPRO said, led to the arrest of a 58-year-old suspect and recovery of the rifle and the magazines.
“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member and armourer of the dreaded “bobone” armed robbery gang terrorizing Warri and environs.
“He also gave the police additional information on the location of the other gang members, and later led them to the gang’s hideout along Chevron Road.
“The team, on approaching the hideout, came under serious attack by his gang members, but the suspect, in an attempt to escape, was fatally maimed on his leg, thereby preventing him.
“His gang members escaped with gunshot injuries, while the suspect was taken to the hospital where he died while receiving treatment,” the image-maker said.
Edafe stated that the operation was in line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, to all DPOs and Area Commanders on the need to sanitise their areas of responsibilities by ensuring that criminals would not find comfort in the state.
He added that a manhunt for other gang members is ongoing.
