The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the deaths of 17 police officers following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The officers were undergoing specialised counter-terrorism and tactical training when the attackers struck the facility in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
According to police authorities, the assault began around 1:15 a.m. as armed terrorists launched coordinated attacks from multiple directions.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, said the officers “paid the supreme price in service to the nation” during the confrontation.
Several soldiers were also reportedly killed while repelling the attackers.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu described the slain officers as courageous personnel committed to national security through advanced operational training.
He extended condolences to the families of the victims, assuring them that the sacrifices of the fallen officers would not be forgotten.
In the aftermath of the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Jibrin, visited the training institution on behalf of the Inspector-General to commiserate with military authorities and surviving officers. He also encouraged trainees to remain steadfast and complete the programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.
Security agencies said efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible for the attack, with the police pledging continued collaboration with the military and other security forces to strengthen counter-terrorism operations in the North-East.
