The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration at the University of Ibadan, Professor Peter O. Olapegba, has said that a world without social scientists will not augur well for humanity, but will be a better place if social science is reckoned with as a catalyst for societal change.

He made this statement while receiving Local Organising Committee members of the 2nd Annual Ibadan International Social Science Conference (AIISSC) during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor.

Professor Olapegba, who spoke on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, stated that a world without social science is unimaginable.

The DVC decried the attitude in some quarters which diminishes the importance of humanities and the social sciences.

He said that social science should be factored into the radicalisation of the educational system, thereby making society a saner place for humanity to thrive.

He appreciated the Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, for upholding academic excellence and its engagement in the cross-fertilisation of ideas that the premier university is known for through generations.

The DVC emphasised the expediency of hosting a conference that gathers researchers, deep thinkers, and industry experts in order to exchange ideas, share fresh perspectives and chart ways forward that could lead to the formulation of new policies.

Professor Olapegba, however, urged the organisers not to end the conference on narratives alone but to address policy issues.

He advised that proceedings of the conference should be well published in the Ibadan Journal of Social Science and showcased in the global space.

He charged the social Slscientists of the University to be involved in the Social Science Academy of Nigeria, saying it is a fertile ground where all social scientists come under one umbrella for the fulfilment of their agenda for national development.

The Dean of Faculty of the Social Sciences, Professor B. O. Ehigie, expressed his appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the University management for the unwavering support given to the faculty.

He said the conference was conceived to be an annual event and that the purpose of the visit was to formally brief the Vice-Chancellor and introduce the conference speakers to him.

The theme of the four-day conference is “Social Science in a Changing World: Challenges, Socio-Economic Adaptation and Resilience.”
