TUMBLER RIDGE, British Columbia — At least nine people have been killed and more than 25 others injured after a mass shooting that targeted a secondary school and a nearby residence in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge in northeastern British Columbia, Canadian authorities said Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Police responded just after 1:20 p.m. local time to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, a small public school serving about 175 students in grades 7 through 12. Officers found several victims inside the school, and another died while being transported to hospital, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.
Two additional bodies were later discovered at a residence believed to be linked to the shootings, law enforcement officials added.
An individual believed to be responsible for the attack was found dead at the scene with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury, the RCMP said, and they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety.
The injured — including two individuals airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries — are being treated at local medical facilities. About 25 others are receiving care for non-life-threatening wounds, police said.
The community of Tumbler Ridge, with a population of roughly 2,400, is more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver. Local schools, including the secondary and elementary schools, were placed on lockdown during the incident and will remain closed for the rest of the week, officials said.
Canadian authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect or a motive for the shootings. RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said investigators are still trying to establish how the victims were connected to the shooter and the full circumstances behind the violence.
National and provincial leaders expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the event as “devastating” and conveyed condolences to the impacted families, while Premier David Eby called it an “unimaginable tragedy.”
Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, and the incident in Tumbler Ridge is one of the deadliest in the country’s recent history. The RCMP said its swift response and cooperation with first responders helped contain further harm.
