May 11, 2026: THE Federal Government has introduced mandatory drug testing for secondary school students as part of efforts to address the growing problem of substance abuse among young Nigerians.
The policy, which targets students in both public and private secondary schools, is aimed at early detection and prevention of drug abuse among teenagers.
Education authorities said the initiative would also help schools identify affected students and provide necessary counselling and rehabilitation support.
Officials expressed concern over increasing reports of drug use among students, warning that substance abuse was affecting academic performance, discipline, and the overall learning environment in schools across the country.
The government noted that the programme would be implemented in collaboration with relevant health and drug enforcement agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Stakeholders in the education sector have, however, expressed mixed reactions to the development. While some described the move as necessary to curb rising drug abuse among youths, others called for greater investment in counselling, mental health support, and awareness campaigns in schools.
The Federal Government said further consultations with school administrators, parents, and education stakeholders would guide the implementation process nationwide.
