The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed reports describing the Sai Malam group as a terrorist organisation, stating that the group has not been officially proscribed under any existing law.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the command said it had commenced an investigation into allegations of the group’s activities in parts of the state, particularly in Argungu Local Government Area.
According to the police, claims circulating about the group’s terrorist status are inaccurate, as no formal designation has been made by the relevant authorities.
The command, however, assured residents that security agencies were taking reports concerning the group seriously and were working to verify available intelligence.
The police recalled that some individuals linked to the group were arrested and prosecuted earlier in the year in Zuru over alleged criminal activities.
During the operation, investigators reportedly recovered suspected counterfeit currencies and items believed to be associated with ritual practices. No firearms were recovered from the suspects, the statement added.
The development follows concerns raised by state officials over the alleged re-emergence of the Sai Malam group in parts of Kebbi.
Security authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring residents that appropriate action would be taken against any individual or group found to be involved in criminal activities.
