A 27-year-old Nigerian caregiver living in the United Kingdom, Beatrice Solomon, has died by suicide, a UK coroner has ruled following an inquest into her death.
Solomon, who relocated from Nigeria to Stoke-on-Trent on a skilled worker visa in November 2023, was found unresponsive at her residence on Norris Road, Stanfield, on March 4. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but she was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. Police investigations found no evidence of third-party involvement.
During the inquest, evidence showed that Solomon had faced mental health challenges over the previous year.
Her husband, Damian Butler, told the hearing that she had struggled with personal difficulties and had previously attempted to take her own life.
The coroner, Li Hammond-Naylor, concluded that Solomon died by suicide after reviewing the evidence presented during the proceedings.
The court heard that Solomon had worked as a carer in the UK after emigrating from Nigeria and is survived by her young son and other family members.
The case has drawn attention within the Nigerian community in the UK, with many expressing condolences to her family and calling for greater awareness of mental health challenges faced by migrants adjusting to life abroad.
