ABUJA — The Federal Government has demanded a full investigation into the death of a Nigerian citizen in a prison facility in Côte d’Ivoire, pledging to take appropriate diplomatic action once the circumstances surrounding the incident are established.
In a statement issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed concern over the death and called on Ivorian authorities to conduct a transparent and comprehensive inquiry into the matter.
The ministry said Nigeria was closely monitoring developments and expected accountability from the relevant authorities.
According to the statement, the government is also seeking detailed information regarding the circumstances that led to the Nigerian’s detention, treatment while in custody, and eventual death. Officials stressed that the welfare and protection of Nigerians abroad remain a priority for the government.
The ministry noted that Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Côte d’Ivoire had been directed to engage with local authorities and ensure that all necessary facts are uncovered.
It added that the government would continue to provide consular support to the deceased’s family and pursue justice through appropriate channels.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of Nigerians living and working overseas, while urging host countries to uphold international standards relating to the treatment of foreign nationals in detention facilities.
Officials said further steps would be determined after the outcome of the investigation, emphasizing that Nigeria expects full cooperation from the Ivorian government in resolving the matter.
