‎Police arrest woman over death of  co-wife’s newborn in Bauchi ‎

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a woman, Rabi Abubakar, for allegedly pouring hot water on her pregnant co-wife during a domestic dispute, an attack that reportedly led to the death of the victim’s newborn baby.

‎The command disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Habib. According to the police, the incident occurred on July 17 in Daba Village, Bauchi Local Government Area.

‎Police said the suspect allegedly scalded her 30-year-old co-wife with boiled water during an altercation. The victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where she received treatment for severe burns.
‎
‎While undergoing treatment, the woman gave birth to a baby boy on July 19. However, the newborn, who reportedly sustained severe burn injuries, died the same day. The mother is said to be stable and responding to treatment.

‎The police spokesperson said operatives immediately launched an investigation after receiving the report and subsequently arrested the suspect. During preliminary interrogation, Abubakar allegedly confessed to committing the offence.

‎Habib said the suspect remains in police custody and that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
‎
‎Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the act and assured the public that the command would ensure diligent prosecution of the case. He also urged residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and report cases of domestic violence to law enforcement authorities.
