The Nigeria Police Force has refuted reports alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directed officers to shoot anyone found with illegal firearms, describing the claim as false and a misrepresentation of his remarks.
In a statement issued on Saturday, July 25, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police said the IGP made no such directive during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State.
The Force explained that his comments had been taken out of context and presented in a misleading manner.
According to the statement, the Inspector-General merely reminded officers that only duly authorised security personnel are permitted by law to bear firearms.
He also highlighted the growing threat posed by the proliferation of illegal weapons, noting that they are frequently used in crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult-related violence and other criminal activities.
The police further clarified that the IGP reiterated the provisions of Force Order 237, which governs the lawful use of firearms by police officers in the discharge of their duties. He stressed that officers must always operate within the law and adhere strictly to established rules on the use of force.
“The Inspector-General did not, at any point, issue a shoot-on-sight order or instruct officers to shoot anyone merely for being in possession of an illegal firearm,” the statement said.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and rights of all Nigerians, stating that officers are expected to carry out their responsibilities professionally, lawfully and with full respect for human rights and the Constitution.
It also urged journalists and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing it, warning that inaccurate reports on security matters could create unnecessary panic, mislead the public and erode confidence in security institutions.

The Force reiterated its resolve to continue enforcing the law fairly, professionally and within constitutional limits while ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.
