Veteran journalist, public relations practitioner and former spokesman to successive Oyo State governors, Oloye Lekan Alabi, has died at the age of 76.
Alabi, who held the traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, reportedly passed away in Lagos on Saturday morning.
His death was announced in a statement issued by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko.
Family sources said the elder statesman would be buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.
Widely regarded as one of Oyo State’s most respected media professionals, Alabi built a distinguished career spanning journalism, public communication and public service. He served as press secretary to several military and civilian governors in Oyo State and earned a reputation as a trusted voice in government communication and public affairs.
Beyond his contributions to journalism, Alabi played an influential role in Ibadan’s traditional institution.
As Abese Olubadan, he was a prominent member of the Olubadan chieftaincy line and was known for his advocacy for the preservation of Ibadan’s history and cultural heritage.
Throughout a career that lasted several decades, Alabi distinguished himself as a journalist, author, public relations consultant and columnist. He was also recognised for his contributions to strategic communication and cultural promotion.
Tributes have begun to pour in from colleagues, associates and admirers, many of whom described his passing as a significant loss to journalism, public service and the traditional institution in Oyo State.
