A graduate of Lagos State University is battling for his life after being struck by a stray bullet during an attempted robbery targeting a Point of Sale (PoS) operator in the Igando area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Sunday on Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area, according to residents.
Eyewitnesses said four armed men riding on two motorcycles trailed a female PoS operator to her residence and attempted to gain access to the building.
However, their efforts were thwarted when occupants quickly shut the entrance door, preventing the assailants from entering.
A resident, identified only as Bode, said the robbers initially searched for the operator at her nearby shop before proceeding to her residence.
“The robbers came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They traced the PoS operator to her house. When they discovered she was not at the shop, they went straight to the house and started calling her while trying to force their way in,” he said.
According to him, the gang became enraged after failing to gain entry and began shooting indiscriminately.
Another resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the victim was walking along the street when the gunfire erupted.
“He unknowingly walked into the area before realising what was happening. That was exactly when the robbers started shooting after they failed to locate their target,” the resident said.
The witness added that neighbours rushed the victim to a nearby General Hospital after the attackers fled the scene.
“One of those who assisted him said he had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps programme,” the resident added.
A police source confirmed that officers were immediately deployed to the area after the incident was reported.
“Our attention was drawn to the attack and personnel were promptly mobilised to the scene. We also recovered spent bullet shells in front of the house,” the source said.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she had not yet received details of the incident but promised to verify the report.
“The report has not gotten to me. I’ll check and revert,” she said.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made, while efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.
