A magistrates’ court in Lagos has sentenced a resident of Meiran to one month imprisonment for illegally dumping refuse into a drainage channel, while two other suspects were arrested in Oworonsoki for similar environmental offences.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) disclosed that the convicted offender was apprehended after being caught disposing of waste into a drain in the Meiran area of the state.
The agency said the prosecution and subsequent conviction formed part of ongoing efforts by the state government to enforce environmental sanitation laws and curb indiscriminate waste disposal.
According to the LAWMA, the offender was arraigned before a magistrate court, which handed down a one-month prison sentence following the prosecution of the case.
LAWMA also announced the arrest of two additional suspects in the Oworonsoki area for allegedly dumping refuse in prohibited locations. The agency said investigations and legal proceedings were being pursued in line with environmental regulations.
The authority warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing that such practices contribute to blocked drainage systems, flooding and environmental degradation.
It urged Lagos residents to patronise approved waste collection operators and comply with sanitation laws.
LAWMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining a cleaner environment across the state, noting that enforcement operations would continue against individuals and businesses found violating waste management regulations.
