The Osun State Police Command has recovered another corpse in connection with the recent violence that claimed the life of an Accord Party chieftain, Olalekan Oyeyemi, in Ile-Ife.
The command said the latest body was discovered within the premises of the Mayfair Motor Park in the ancient town during ongoing investigations into the incident that has heightened tension in the area.
Oyeyemi, a prominent member of the Accord Party, was reportedly shot dead by gunmen in Ile-Ife last week. Family members, friends and political associates on Monday paid their final respects as he was laid to rest amid calls for justice and improved security.
Police authorities said operatives had intensified efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify those responsible.
The recovery of the second corpse has further deepened concerns over the spate of violence linked to the incident.
The command assured residents that investigations were ongoing and urged members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist security agencies in tracking down the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, sympathisers who attended Oyeyemi’s burial described his death as a painful loss to the political community and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that those behind the attack are brought to justice.
The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state, adding that adequate security measures had been put in place to prevent further breakdown of law and order in the affected areas.
