Nigeria’s entertainment industry was thrown into mourning on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, following the death of veteran actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, at the age of 84.

His passing was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a statement shared on Instagram, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades across theatre, television and film.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” the family said while appealing for privacy during the mourning period.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the founding pillars of modern Nollywood. His commanding voice, dignified screen presence and exceptional versatility earned him a place among Africa’s most respected actors.

His journey into acting began in Kano, where he attended Holy Trinity School and participated in debating and drama activities. Inspired by legendary theatre icon Hubert Ogunde, he later travelled to the United Kingdom to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.

Before becoming a household name in Nigeria, Jacobs built an impressive international profile, appearing in British television productions such as The Goodies, The Professionals and The Tomorrow People.

He also featured in international films including The Dogs of War, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend and Roman Polanski’s Pirates.

On his return to Nigeria in the 1980s and early 1990s, Jacobs became one of the leading figures in the emerging video-film industry that later evolved into Nollywood.

He appeared in hundreds of productions, often portraying kings, chiefs, patriarchs and other authority figures whose wisdom and gravitas resonated with audiences across generations.

Many industry observers credit him and a handful of contemporaries with helping transform Nigerian filmmaking into one of the world’s most prolific film industries.

His performances set standards for professionalism and excellence that inspired generations of actors.

Beyond the screen, Jacobs and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, became one of Nigeria’s most admired couples in the creative industry. Through the Lufodo Group and related initiatives, they contributed significantly to the training and mentoring of young performers.

In recent years, the actor battled age-related health challenges, prompting periodic concerns and rumours about his condition.

In 2024, his family publicly debunked false reports of his death, assuring fans that he was alive and receiving care.

News of his passing triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, colleagues and admirers across Nigeria and beyond. President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were among prominent Nigerians who described his death as a significant loss to the nation’s cultural and creative heritage.

For many Nigerians, Olu Jacobs was more than an actor. He was a symbol of excellence, discipline and artistic integrity whose career bridged generations—from the era of stage drama and early television to the global rise of Nollywood.

Though the curtain has now fallen on his earthly stage, his legacy lives on through the countless films, performances and talents he inspired.

Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva; children, grandchildren and a vast community of admirers whose lives he touched through his art.
