Kevin Bleyer, a four-time Emmy-winning writer who worked on The Daily Show and helped write speeches for former US President Barack Obama, has died in a car crash at the age of 54.
Bleyer died on Sunday, October 25, 2026, while driving on a rural road in Millrift, Pennsylvania, where he had a home.
His publicist confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter, adding that no one else was injured.
Details about the circumstances that led to the crash have not been publicly established in the reports cited, Thenewsbearer gathered.
He joined Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show on Comedy Central in 2005, after working on Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect from 2000 to 2002 and Dennis Miller’s CNBC programme during the 2004–2005 season.
His work on The Daily Show earned him four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award and a Writers Guild Award.
Bleyer also contributed to speeches delivered by Obama at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, an annual event known for its political humour.
He was associated with the writing behind the 2011 dinner, where Obama famously mocked Donald Trump, who was then a prominent real estate businessman and television personality.
Beyond television, Bleyer co-wrote Earth: The Book with Stewart and other Daily Show writers.
The satirical publication became a New York Times bestseller. He also authored Me the People, a humorous examination of the US Constitution published in 2012.
His career extended into international media development. In 2013, he worked in Kyrgyzstan as executive producer of Studio 7, described as Central Asia’s first political satire news programme.
He later co-founded Pilot Media Initiatives, which develops civic-minded media projects, and taught dramatic writing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Bleyer also served as deputy chief speechwriter to former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, bringing his experience in political communication beyond the world of comedy.
His death was announced by his wife, Nella Vera, who described him as her soulmate and partner in crime.
In her tribute, she recalled their life together, filled with love, laughter, travel and dogs, while expressing devastation over his sudden death.
Comedian and actor Josh Gad and writer-producer Danny Strong were among those who paid tribute to Bleyer, praising his talent, wit and kindness.
His family encouraged memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association’s New York City chapter or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Bleyer is survived by his wife, father, Archie, brother, Keith, and other family members.
