Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered for immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer, Onipanu Division, CSP Francis Ani, and some policemen, for the harassment and illegal detention of Tunde Abass and one Kabir Mohammed at Onipanu on Friday, March 19, 2021.
Abass was detained by the DPO and his men , over the allegation that he was recording the harassment and forceful arrest of Kabir Mohammed at Onipanu area the same day, at about 5pm.
Abass’ intervention in the case was said to have not gone well with the policemen.
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 25, the police image-maker in the state, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said that the police commissioner took the decision on Wednesday, March 24, after going through the report of the investigation into the incident, which had gone viral.
The action of the DPO and his men was perceived as gross violation of Abass’ human rights by the public.
Describing the police officers’ act as unprofessional and excessive use of power, Odumosu condemned it, using it to send a signal to the whole world that the command would not condone such act.
The police boss also said that it would serve as a deterrent to other policemen fond of harassing, extorting and engaging in acts of lawlessness, unprofessionalism and gross violation of people’s human rights in the state.
He ordered that the policemen involved should be given orderly room trial, in order to award punishments accordingly, while the DPO would be redeployed to the command headquarters at Ikeja.
