Ogun State Police Command has given security tips to reveal new tactics employed by criminals, so as to enable residents of the state to minimise the chances of falling victims.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 26, 2021, by the state police image-maker, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, it was said that the tips were necessary because of the prevalent security situation in Nigeria generally, coupled with some people’s attitude to security issues.

According to the PPRO, “the Ogun State Police Command once again wants to reiterate the need for the general public to increase their level of security consciousness, in view of the prevailing security situation in the country and the nonhalant attitude to security issues exhibited by some people.

“It is to this end that the following security tips are hereby provided to members of the public, on how to keep them abreast of the new tactics of criminals.”

Some of the criminals’ tactics included an ambush, which makes hoodlums, including kidnappers, to lie in wait in isolated areas, where they would pounce on innocent person to rob or abduct them for ransom.

“It is advisable that all such isolated roads are avoided as much as possible, especially at night,” he advised.

He also mentioned the use of commercial motorcycle with accomplices to pick innocent passengers.

Oyeyemi said that with the system, “a kidnapper would pretend to be an okada rider, while his accomplice would pretend to be a passenger.

“In doing this, the accomplice, who would have laced his backside with sedative, would be in the middle, while their victim behind him would fall asleep after inhaling the sedative.”

He added that another tactic being used by kidnappers is targeting businessmen and women who close late from their shops and business offices.

“To this end, the (Ogun) Command hereby appeals to members of the public to always avoid travelling alone on isolated roads, especially at night.

“Also, those whose cars are not in good mechanical condition should avoid night travelling, because if such vehicle breaks down, such person(s) may have unknowingly given the kidnappers opportunity to attack them.

“Furthermore, members of public are advised to always avoid being the third person on a commercial motorcycle, most especially when the two other persons are not known to them.

“Our businessmen and women should as well endeavour to avoid closing too late from their business places, pending when those marauders, who are making life difficult for our people, will be apprehended.

“Conclusively, the Command is working round the clock to ensure the safety of residents of the state, and the support of the general public is therefore needed to achieve this onerous task,” the PPRO said.
