ABOUT 20 people were reported to have died following a road traffic accident on the Zaria-Kano highway on Saturday afternoon.
An eyewitness told Thenewsbearer that the accident involved a Hummer bus and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) which collided and resulted into the death of 20 passengers.
According to the source, the burial of 10 passengers had been conducted according to Islamic injunctions.
Findings also revealed that eight of the deceased were coming from a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred.
In a statement, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed accident.
Aruwan said security agencies reported that several people lost their lives in a ghastly road traffic crash along Kauran Wali axis of the Zaria-Kano Road.
“The fatal crash occurred in the afternoon of Saturday, June 5, and it involved a Hummer bus belonging to Kano Line and a private Toyota Rav4 SUV. The bus was Kano-bound, while the SUV was headed for Zaria.
“According to eye-witness reports, the crash was a head-on collision between the two vehicles, resulting from dangerous driving and overtaking along a diversion point on the highway.
“Over 20 people were involved in the crash; 10 persons died on the spot and others died later at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika. Those injured remain in the hospital.
“Governor Nasir El-Rufai received the reports with sadness and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, while sending condolences to their families. He wished the injured a quick recovery.”
