April 22, 2026: Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Adelabu, in his resignation letter dated April 22 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, said his resignation would take effect from April 30 to allow for a smooth handover of responsibilities.
The former minister expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a privilege and reaffirming his commitment to public service.
His resignation comes amid growing speculation over his plans to contest the governorship of Oyo State under the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Sources close to the development said Adelabu’s decision followed consultations with party stakeholders and was influenced by preparations for the 2027 governorship race.
Adelabu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, had previously contested the Oyo governorship election and is expected to seek the APC ticket once the party’s primary process begins.
His exit is expected to trigger political calculations over his replacement in the power ministry, while also reshaping the contest to succeed incumbent Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde.
Observers say Adelabu’s entry could intensify competition within the APC as the party positions itself to reclaim the state in 2027.
