The Anambra State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its fight against child trafficking with the arrest of three women allegedly linked to a child trafficking syndicate, while intensifying efforts to apprehend other fleeing suspects and rescue the trafficked children.
The suspects, identified as Florence Nnakuzie, 45, Hannah Ugah, 52, and Chinasa Daniel, 27, were arrested by operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters during an intelligence-led operation at a motor park in Onitsha on Saturday, July 11.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Chinasa Daniel allegedly handed over a two-week-old baby and a four-year-old child to Hannah Ugah on separate occasions between June and December 2025.
Police further alleged that the four-year-old child was later handed over to Florence Nnakuzie and sold for ₦2 million, while the infant was allegedly sold to another woman who remains at large.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who commended members of the public for providing credible information that led to the successful operation and urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely intelligence.
In his comment, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, described child trafficking as a grave violation of human rights and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.
He also ordered operatives to intensify efforts to arrest other members of the syndicate and rescue the trafficked children for reunification with their biological families.
