Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, respect for human rights and public trust, stressing that effective crime-fighting must remain within the bounds of the law.
Disu stated this on Saturday, October 17, at the launch of Beyond the Bullets: Policing Terrorism in a Democratic System, authored by a retired IGP, Dr MD Abubakar, at the Police Resource Centre, Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police chief said the book’s central message aligned with the Force’s commitment to professional, accountable and democratic policing.
He noted that effective policing required more than the use of force, identifying adherence to the rule of law, professional competence and public trust as essential elements in combating crime in a democratic society.
Disu urged police officers and Nigerians to read the book not merely as a record of past events but as a resource for understanding the need for sustained police reform, professionalism and respect for democratic values.
He emphasised that efforts to combat terrorism must remain consistent with constitutional obligations and respect for fundamental human rights.
The IGP also commended Abubakar for his leadership during a challenging period of insurgency and terrorism, noting that his record demonstrated that decisive action against criminal threats could be pursued without compromising constitutional principles.
He described the publication as a valuable resource for policymakers, security practitioners, scholars and members of the public, drawing on decades of operational experience, strategic thinking and sacrifice.
According to him, the lessons contained in the book could help guide current and future police leaders as they navigate the complex demands of maintaining security in a democratic society.
Disu, on behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, congratulated the retired police chief on the publication and its formal presentation, wishing him good health, long life and continued contributions to national development.
