Five suspects, including a female gang leader, have been arrested by Kano State Police Command for allegedly stealing phones and hacking victims’ bank accounts to get their money.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, gave the name of the female gang leader as Shamsiyya Adamu, aged 19, and resident in Brigade Quarters Kano.
Thenewsbearer gathered that the female suspect was arrested on December 21, 2024, following reports of stolen mobile phones in Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano.
According to the PPRO, the Command had been inundated with numerous reports from residents of Kano metropolis about a young lady who was stealing mobile phones from residential houses.
The reports had it that the suspect was using a tricyclist and a cyber criminal to aid her operations.
As a result of the reports, the Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, raised a special intervention squad, leading to the arrest of the principal suspect.
During interrogation, the female suspect, who confessed to the crime, gave the names of her gang members.
They included Idris Yusuf, aged 23; Al’Hassan Dahiru, 24 years old; Abdulmajid Haruna, 27; and Salim Auwalu, aged 21, who were also arrested.
The gang’s mode of operation
Thenewsbearer learnt that the suspects would deceive housewives, steal their mobile phones and gain access to their bank accounts from which they would steal money.
The role of one of the gang members, Yusuf, tricycle rider was to transport the principal suspect to commit the crime while Dahiru would find buyers for the stolen items.
Haruna was said to be the buyer of the stolen property, with six mobile phones recovered from him, while Auwalu was the one retrieving money from victims’ bank accounts.
The police spokesman gave the number of complainants as 30, consisting of 29 females and a male, adding that efforts were ongoing to recover more stolen phones.
