Three women were killed and another person injured when gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Monday at about 4:30pm when the assailants reportedly stormed the mining site and opened fire on workers before fleeing the area.
The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack, saying three women were killed while another person sustained injuries.
Tengwong expressed concern over the safety of residents and workers in the area, urging security agencies to track down the attackers and bring them to justice.
A community member, John Silas, also confirmed the incident, saying the gunmen opened fire on people at the mining site.
Silas appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further attacks in the community.
The latest attack comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Plateau State, particularly in Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Riyom and Bokkos Local Government Areas.
Several attacks have reportedly occurred in the affected communities in recent weeks, despite security measures, including a curfew imposed by the state government.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement on Monday’s mining site attack.
The command’s spokesman, Alabo Alfred, was reportedly unavailable for comment.
