A suspected armed robber, who has been using the uniform of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to disguise, has been arrested by the operatives of Ogun State Police Command.
The suspect, Adeolu Bankole, of Idagba Quarters, Ayetoro Town, was nabbed on Friday, February 5, 2021, according to the state police image-maker, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi.
The PPRO said that Bankole’s arrest was preceded by a complaint from some students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ayetoro campus, who reported at Ayetoro Area Command that they were robbed of their belongings at gunpoint by an armed robber.
The students had told the police that the armed robber, who was dressed in the uniform of Civil Defence officials, broke into their apartment and dispossessed them of their phones and laptop.
Oyeyemi said that the report made the Area Commander, ACP Anthony Haruna, to detail his detectives to go after the hoodlum.
“After hours of painstaking investigation, the detectives received information about the hideout of the suspect.
“On getting there, a bag, containing six phones, a laptop, a pair of civil defence uniform and a locally-made pistol, was found.
“Upon the discovery, the detectives mounted surveillance on the area, and at about 5pm, the suspect sneaked into the uncompleted building which was his hideout, and moved to where the bag was kept.
“He was quickly rounded up and brought to the station. Two other stolen phones and a wrist watch were also found with him,” the PPRO stated.
He said that the complainants identified him as the person who robbed them.
He added that preliminary investigation further revealed that the suspect stole the pair of civil defence uniform from a parked Toyota Camry car belonging to an officer of the Corps in December 2020.
After stealing the uniform, the suspect reportedly set the car ablaze. The uniform, however, has been identified by the officer as his own.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Edward A. Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.
