Abuja, June 10, 2026 — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to their respective geopolitical zones as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness, enhance supervision, and improve security coordination across Nigeria.
The deployment, which takes effect from June 15, 2026, was announced during the monthly conference with strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The statement, issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid, on Wednesday, said the initiative is aimed at bringing strategic leadership closer to the field, reinforcing accountability, and ensuring prompt responses to emerging security threats across the country.
Under the new arrangement, the DIGs will work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to strengthen operational oversight and ensure the effective implementation of policing directives.
In a related directive, the IGP ordered all Commissioners of Police nationwide to immediately establish coordinated inter-state security operations, codenamed “Handshake Patrols,” with neighbouring state commands.
The initiative is designed to boost intelligence sharing, improve operational communication, and facilitate joint responses to crimes that transcend state boundaries.
Disu noted that criminal elements often exploit jurisdictional gaps by committing offences in one state and fleeing to another, making closer collaboration among police commands essential.
He therefore charged Commissioners of Police to maintain regular engagement with their counterparts in neighbouring states, conduct coordinated patrols along major entry and exit routes, and adopt a regional approach to tackling security challenges.
The Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to intelligence-led policing, strategic coordination, and inter-agency collaboration aimed at protecting lives and property while enhancing public safety across the country.
