The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has launched the maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers in partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA).

This was a move aimed at improving the economic wellbeing of police families.

The programme, held at the M.D. Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, was themed “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment.”

The event was hosted by the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, and attended by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers from across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, IGP Disu described the initiative as a strategic investment in the stability and welfare of police families, stressing that the wellbeing of officers cannot be separated from that of their households.

He commended the wives of junior police officers for their unwavering support, which he said contributes significantly to the morale and effectiveness of the Force.

The Inspector-General urged beneficiaries to utilise the vocational training and empowerment materials as a foundation for building sustainable businesses and achieving financial independence.

In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, said the programme reflects the Fund’s commitment to strengthening police families through economic empowerment in addition to its investments in training, infrastructure and operational support.

He noted that the vocational skills and start-up packs provided to beneficiaries were designed to create lasting sources of income, adding that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Also speaking, the National President of POWA, Mrs. Disu, described the programme as a strategic investment in the morale, welfare and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force rather than an act of charity.

She said national security begins with stable families and pledged POWA’s continued collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to sustain the initiative.

She also called on government institutions and private organisations to support similar empowerment programmes for police families.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel and their families through partnerships with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders to build stronger police families and enhance effective policing across the country.
