A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Kamoru Omokoye, has been shot dead by suspected cultists at Abijo Bus Stop in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
The victim was reportedly attacked on Sunday morning when armed assailants arrived at the bus stop and opened fire on him.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers shot Omokoye in the head before fleeing the scene in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 vehicle.
Sources in the community said the incident occurred around 9 a.m., causing panic among residents and commuters in the area.
The attackers were said to have escaped immediately after carrying out the attack.
A police source who confirmed the incident described the suspects as suspected cultists and said security operatives had commenced efforts to track them down. Detectives were subsequently deployed to the scene as part of the investigation.
The source disclosed that the victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, for emergency treatment following the attack. However, doctors at the facility later confirmed him dead.
Meanwhile, anti-cultism advocacy platform Naija Confra alleged that the deceased, popularly known as “Zobo,” was sitting at a local gin spot near the bus stop when the gunmen arrived and opened fire.
According to the platform, at least three other persons sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
The group further stated that Omokoye had previously worked at Awoyaya Bus Stop before relocating to GRA Bus Stop and is survived by an eight-month-old child.
