A 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Okorafor, was on Friday, December 30, 2022, arrested by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives at Ojota, Lagos State, after he was caught in an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) fraud.
The spokesman in the state Police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known in a tweet on his official Twitter handle.
According to the PPRO, “Okorafor has been defrauding PoS (Point of Sale) operators of various sums of money. He would normally give them a figure in seven, which the operator would enter into his POS (for example N52,000:00). Once the machine was handed to him to enter his PIN, he would cleverly delete two zeros (leaving N5,200:00) before returning it to the operators.
“With this, the operators would pay him N52,000:00 while he would be debited N5,200:00.”
The suspect, who said that he started the fraudulent activity three weeks ago, confessed that he re-enacted same fraud in five POS points on Friday around Ogudu GRA and Ojota before he was arrested in the evening.
On same day, three POS operators said he played the same trick on them. His ATM card matched the one used in defrauding the victims.
Some of the operators said that the suspect’s tricks had caused them to accuse and sack many of their attendants, with the belief that they stole their money.
SP Hundeyin stated further that investigations revealed that the suspect’s ATM card was used to collect various sums of money ranging from N5,500 to N52,000 in many POS points.
