The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested a dismissed operative, Yahaya Salami, popularly known as Adams, over allegations of impersonation and extortion after he was captured in a viral video being apprehended by the agency’s operatives in Oshodi.
The arrest was carried out at Oshodi Bus Stop on Sunday, October 18, following previous unsuccessful attempts to track down the suspect, according to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem.
Salami, a former paramilitary operative attached to the Taskforce, was reportedly dismissed several months ago over alleged gross misconduct, including theft, use of a fake identity card, extortion of motorists and traders, and indiscipline.
Despite his dismissal, the agency alleged that he continued to present himself as a serving Taskforce official.
The statement said operatives invited Salami for questioning when they accosted him but that he declined the invitation and resisted arrest.
The officers subsequently brought the situation under control through what the agency described as effective tactical coordination and professionalism, using minimal force.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, clarified that the individual seen in the viral video was a former operative who no longer had any affiliation with the agency.
Akerele said the alleged impersonation was a serious concern because it could mislead members of the public and undermine confidence in legitimate law enforcement activities.
He said the arrest demonstrated the agency’s resolve to prevent dismissed personnel and other unauthorised individuals from exploiting its name, identity and authority for unlawful purposes.
The Taskforce added that its sensitisation and advocacy programmes across the 57 local government areas and local council development areas of Lagos State were aimed at promoting compliance with the law, maintaining order and improving public safety.
The programmes also target commercial motorcycle operators and other road users, educating them on restricted routes and the dangers of driving against traffic, popularly known as one-way, including along the coastal road and other parts of the state.
The agency said the suspect was expected to be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction on Monday, October 19, subject to the conclusion of necessary procedures.
Akerele warned dismissed personnel and other individuals against impersonating Taskforce officials or engaging in activities capable of tarnishing the agency’s image, stressing that offenders would face the consequences of the law.
He urged residents to verify the identities of individuals claiming to be Taskforce officials and report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
The chairman also called on journalists to uphold responsible reporting by verifying allegations, establishing facts and obtaining the views of relevant parties before publication.
