The League of Online Publishers and Editors (LOPE) has felicitated teachers across Nigeria and beyond on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day, calling for improved welfare, better working conditions and increased investment in the education sector.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Favour Benson, to mark the annual celebration, LOPE described teachers as critical to national development, noting that they play a central role in shaping the character, knowledge and future of young people.
The association commended Nigerian teachers for continuing to discharge their responsibilities despite challenging conditions, particularly those serving in rural communities where schools often grapple with shortages of teaching materials, infrastructure and other basic facilities.
LOPE urged the Federal and state governments to give greater attention to the education sector by improving teachers’ welfare, expanding access to continuous professional training, providing adequate teaching resources and creating conducive working environments.
Benson said teachers deserved greater recognition for their contributions to national development, stressing that their welfare should be treated as a priority by governments and other stakeholders.
“As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, LOPE salutes teachers across Nigeria for their dedication and sacrifice despite the challenges they face in the education sector.
“Every strong nation is built on the foundation of quality education, and teachers are at the heart of that process. We cannot expect better educational outcomes while neglecting the people responsible for educating our children,” she said.
The LOPE Chairman added: “Teachers deserve to work in an environment where they are respected, fairly rewarded and given the tools and training required to succeed.”
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5 to honour educators and draw attention to the status of the teaching profession globally.
The occasion also highlights issues affecting teachers, including working conditions, professional development, remuneration, recruitment and retention.
On improving education in Nigeria, LOPE called on the Federal Government, state governments and relevant education authorities to strengthen policies aimed at improving teachers’ welfare and working conditions.
The association also urged governments to increase education funding at both federal and state levels, expand professional development programmes, provide modern teaching materials and ensure that schools have adequate facilities for teachers and students.
LOPE further called on the Nigerian media to sustain coverage of education-related issues and highlight both the contributions and challenges of teachers through responsible journalism.
