Fifty out of over 300 pupils kidnapped from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, have successfully escaped and are now back with their families, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has confirmed.
In a statement on Sunday, Bishop Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, chairman of CAN in Niger State and Proprietor of the school, said the students fled between Friday and Saturday. “They have reunited with their parents,” he added, explaining that many could not return to the school immediately after escaping.
According to CAN, some of the pupils hid in the bush, while others were helped by local farmers. After their escape, school officials initiated a verification process, contacting parents and visiting homes to confirm which children had returned.
The original abduction occurred on November 21, 2025, when armed men stormed the school, kidnapping 303 pupils and 12 staff members, according to CAN.
Bishop Yohanna said that out of 430 primary school pupils, 377 are boarders.
As of the Sunday statement, 253 children and 12 staff remain in captivity.
Bishop Yohanna appealed for calm and urged the public to continue praying for the safe release of those still held. “We will continue to actively collaborate with security operatives, community leaders, government, and relevant authorities for the safe and quick return of all abductees,” he said.
