Nigeria issues safety alert after ninth woman found dead in South Africa

The Nigerian government has issued a safety advisory to its citizens living in South Africa following the discovery of a ninth woman’s body in the Ekurhuleni area east of Johannesburg, where police are investigating a series of killings that have sparked fears of a possible serial murderer.

The latest victim was found on Thursday, bringing to nine the number of women whose bodies have been recovered in the area over the past two months. South African authorities said the woman appeared to be within the same age range as the previous victims but stopped short of confirming that the deaths were linked.

The development has heightened concerns among Nigerians and other foreign nationals residing in South Africa, prompting Nigerian authorities to urge citizens to remain vigilant, avoid isolated locations and maintain regular contact with family members and community groups.

South African police said some of the victims were women in their 20s and 30s, with several found partially clothed and showing signs of sexual violence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered a high-priority investigation into the deaths, promising that no effort would be spared in bringing those responsible to justice.

The killings have reignited public outrage over gender-based violence in South Africa, a country that continues to battle high levels of violent crime against women.

Residents of Ekurhuleni have expressed fear and anxiety as investigators work to determine whether the cases are connected.

For Nigeria, the latest security concerns come amid already strained relations over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.

Earlier this month, Nigeria’s National Assembly announced the suspension of official parliamentary visits to South Africa over recurring attacks and violence affecting migrants, including Nigerians.

The Nigerian parliament said it was concerned by reports of Nigerians being killed, injured, displaced and forced to abandon businesses and property as a result of violent incidents in South Africa.

Community leaders and women’s rights groups in South Africa have also called for stronger protection measures following the discovery of the bodies.

Memorial events, prayer services and public demonstrations have been organised in several communities to honour the victims and demand swift action from authorities.

Police said investigations into the latest discovery were ongoing and appealed to members of the public to provide information that could assist in solving the cases.

Authorities have increased police visibility in affected areas as fears continue to grow among residents and foreign nationals living in the country.
