Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has directed its students to return to Halls of Residence on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
Full academic activities will commence on Thursday, October 20, for the continuation of the 2021/2022 session.
This was announced in a statement by the institution’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. Margaret Omosule.
The decision was said to have been taken at a special meeting of the University Senate, which was held in Oduduwa Hall on Tuesday, October 18.
“On behalf of the Council and Senate of the University, we wish our students an uninterrupted academic session and a safe trip from their respective locations,” the Registrar said in the statement.
Resumption of academic activities in Nigerian universities was sequel to the suspension of eight-month-old strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which started on February 14.
ASUU had agitated for better funding of universities as well as improved welfare for its members based on several deals reached with the government.
The Union also asked for the release of the revitalisation funds for schools, payment of earned academic allowances to members, and release of whitepapers from the reports of the presidential visitation panels.
It also demanded the usage of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment platform for university workers, against the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
However , the Federal Government and ASUU’s inability to reach a deal made the industrial action indefinite in August.
