One person has died following the collapse of part of an old building being demolished at Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command, in a statement by its spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the incident occurred during the demolition of the structure, when a section suddenly collapsed and trapped one of the workers.
Police operatives from the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded to the scene after receiving the report, cordoned off the area and commenced preliminary investigations.
The scene was also documented, while the deceased, identified as 25-year-old Bakeru Iwal, was evacuated to the mortuary for preservation pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, has directed a professional and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the Command, the investigation will determine whether any person bears responsibility for the incident, with appropriate action to be taken based on its findings.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, assuring that further updates would be provided as necessary.
