‎The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested and detained four police officers accused of extorting N53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), during an unauthorised stop-and-search operation in Abuja.
‎
‎The officers were apprehended following an internal investigation launched after the incident was reported to the police authorities.
‎
‎According to reports, the officers allegedly stopped the ICPC chairman, took him to a Point of Sale (POS) terminal, and compelled him to withdraw N53,000, including transaction charges, before sharing the proceeds among themselves.
‎
‎Police authorities confirmed that the officers had been taken into custody and were undergoing disciplinary procedures in line with the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.
‎
‎The command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extortion, corruption, and other forms of misconduct by its personnel.
‎
‎The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the persistence of extortion and abuse of power by some law enforcement officers despite ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force. In recent years, the Force has sanctioned and prosecuted officers implicated in similar cases as part of efforts to restore public confidence in policing.
‎
‎The police assured members of the public that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face the full weight of disciplinary and legal sanctions, while urging citizens to continue reporting cases of extortion and unprofessional conduct.
