The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a suspect allegedly responsible for creating and circulating an AI-generated voice note falsely attributed to President Bola Tinubu.
The arrest was announced on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who identified the suspect as Ifechukwu Dennis.
According to him, the suspect was apprehended by a police special operations team following investigations into the controversial audio recording.
The manipulated voice note sparked widespread debate after it circulated on social media in late May.
The recording, which allegedly mimicked President Tinubu’s voice using artificial intelligence technology, contained controversial remarks on insecurity, the 2023 presidential election, and the welfare of Nigerians.
The controversy gained further attention after the audio appeared in a viral video associated with social media activist , Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
The Presidency had earlier described the recording as fake and warned against the spread of misinformation online.
Authorities said the arrest followed efforts to trace the origin of the fabricated recording.
The Presidency has maintained that the audio did not originate from President Tinubu and described its circulation as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
The police have not yet released full details of the investigation or disclosed any additional charges that may be filed against the suspect.
However, officials say inquiries into the creation and dissemination of the doctored recording are ongoing.
