The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, has provided financial support, business grants and food items to women traders and widows during a two-day welfare outreach to police barracks in the Federal Capital Territory.
The outreach, held ahead of the 2026 POWA National Convention scheduled for July 16 to 18, featured unannounced visits to the markets at Area C Police Barracks, Nyanya, and 44 PMF Barracks, Kuje, where Disu interacted directly with traders and spouses of serving police officers.
After observing that many shops were poorly stocked due to financial constraints, she distributed cash support, business grants, food items and starter packs to selected beneficiaries to help revive their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Explaining the reason for the surprise visits, Disu said she wanted to see the realities facing police families firsthand.
“I wanted to meet our women in their everyday environment, listen to them, and see their challenges for myself. It is only when we understand their realities that we can provide support that truly meets their needs,” she said.
She noted that the intervention is part of the POWA CARES Initiative, which promotes healthcare, welfare and economic empowerment for police families in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
According to her, the outreach also reflects the objectives of the forthcoming POWA National Convention themed, “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace,” with a focus on healthcare, mental wellness, economic empowerment and stronger support systems for police families.
Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the intervention, describing it as timely assistance that would help improve their businesses and livelihoods. Widows and wives of serving officers also commended the initiative, saying it renewed hope and demonstrated POWA’s continued commitment to the welfare of police families.
