Authorities have launched an investigation into the deaths of about 40 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, sparking outrage and raising concerns over detention conditions.

The miners were among dozens of suspects arrested during operations against illegal mining activities in the state and detained by the NSCDC earlier this week.

State officials said the detainees died under unclear circumstances, with initial reports suggesting a possible disease outbreak, although the exact cause has yet to be determined.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced a period of mourning for the victims and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Authorities said the bodies had been transferred to a hospital in Minna for autopsies and further medical examinations to establish the cause of death.

However, questions have emerged over the circumstances surrounding the deaths. One survivor alleged that dozens of detainees were held in an overcrowded and poorly ventilated cell, making it difficult for them to breathe.

According to the survivor, the situation deteriorated rapidly as detainees struggled for fresh air and attempted to attract the attention of security personnel.

Families of the deceased have called on the government to ensure accountability and provide answers. Relatives gathered at the hospital where the bodies were taken, demanding justice and support for affected families.

The Niger State Police Command said it had commenced an investigation into the incident and appealed to relatives and witnesses with useful information to come forward.

The tragedy has renewed attention on illegal mining in Nigeria, particularly in the North-Central and North-West regions, where authorities have intensified crackdowns on unlicensed mining operations. Security analysts have previously linked illegal mining activities in some parts of the country to the financing of criminal groups involved in kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Officials said findings from the ongoing investigations and medical examinations would determine the actual cause of the deaths and whether any negligence or misconduct contributed to the incident.
